A Virtual Simulator to Teach Medical Students

The Faculty of Medicine and Odontology of the UPV has installed a virtual reality simulator that allows students to practice venipuncture, the needle into a vein to administer the patient to some kind of drug or treatment. The center of the UPV is the first in Spain to be endowed with a team of those characteristics.
The software displays a very realistic with which patients can practice all the venipuncture protocol. Students must use the right tool every time and in proper order, otherwise it stops the simulation. Students must choose the appropriate size of needle, using appropriate antiseptic technique and prick the vein at the precise angle using the injection device connected to your computer.
By introducing the needle, students may notice a resistance similar to that received in real patients. And if the puncture is not correct, the ‘virtual patient’ audibly expresses pain. Once completed, the exercise computer system makes note to the student.
