Monitoring in Star Trek’s Style

Star Trek-style, work is non-invasive systems capable of using light to the amount of oxygen in the blood and the pH level. The prototype, known as Venus, is being developed by the NSBRI National Space Biomedical Research Institute), and may determine the chemical composition of a tissue or blood, oxygen consumption and other parameters.
The device is placed directly on the skin, and use infrared sensors to take measurements. The operation is typical of a pulse oximeter, as blood absorbs certain wavelengths, and reflects the rest of the sensor. Although in principle is being developed for use by astronauts in space, it is expected that can be subsequently used for first aid kits.
