Two years ago, a researcher at Baylor University developed an accurate and effective electromagnetic sensor that provides non-diabetic one alternative invasive to measure their glucose levels. There was only one problem: it was too big to upload.

Today, researchers at Baylor announced that they have developed a sensory method that uses a circuit board small enough so that the device is portable.

To measure glucose levels, users must press a part of your hand or finger on the sensor. The Baylor investigadors daily samples of 31 people during the course of several months and compared these samples to levels measured by a commercially available sensor without a prescription. The researchers found that non-invasive sensor Baylor has the potential to achieve the same and even better accuracy than current commercial sensors, many of which require you to prick the finger to sample blood.

“For diabetics, the daily routine of pricking your finger to check levels of blood sugar can be an annoying and inconvenient task, but now we have a device that could potentially change that.” said Dr. Randall Jean, associate professor of computer and electronic engineering at Baylor. “We have the equipment to the point where it justifies a significant investment. The probability of success is very high.”

The sensor uses electromagnetic waves to measure glucose levels in the body. As the energy passes through the skin sensor and back to the sensor, the glucose level is measured by the energy transfer. Jean said that the microwave frequency range is wide enough to isolate the effect of sugar in the body and minimize the capabilities of other things like body fat and bone, which could alter readings. Jean also said that using electromagnetic waves is relatively safe because they do not ionize the molecules of the body as do X-rays.

Jean, who is pre-diabetic, has the patent for the general measurement method called pulse dispersion spectrometry ultra-broadband, and Baylor has applied for a provisional patent in regard to non-invasive monitoring of glucose. Researchers at Baylor now hope to conduct more tests on a larger diabetic population. The current commercial sensors measure the levels of glucose in the range of 20 to 600 milligrams per deciliter, while Baylor prototype sensor has been shown to have a range of 60 to 185 milligrams per deciliter, but Jean said the fact that the sensor has good resolution and accuracy over the limited range demonstrates that the technology can work.

A new device could facilitate greatly the lives of diabetic patients will be treated the DIAdvisor Blood Glucose Predictor, a laptop that will work wirelessly and let you know in a few minutes, how much glucose is in the blood and therefore know how much insulin is required to eat at a given time.

This device would still be in the process of creation, a project that not only has the support of the European Community but also with 7.1 million directly financed by the Community institution.

As anticipated, the basis of DIAdvisor be a small wireless sensors, chip surrounded by a low Sicily, to be pasted into the body of patients and allow more data record: in addition to blood glucose, may also determine the body temperature, blood pressure and oxygen levels.

The same system will then transmit the data to the portable mobile device, which looks like a PDA or PDA.

But also we obtained this information, the device also will allow the patient to go beyond your control and up, for example, information about food that is consumed each day.

According to their own architects have emphasized, the most innovative of this device is to let you know how much insulin is needed: Keith Errey, co-founder of the project and president of Toumaz (manufacturer), highlighted the new opportunities offered to patients who so far have no ways to predict the levels of glucose and insulin they need.

It is worth mentioning, finally, that for the go live DIAdvisor still have to wait. According to estimates, within two years could just start clinical trials in real time with volunteers.

Pulse, breathing, coughing, even complain, and may suffer from any illness. It is not a dummy, despite appearances, but is an advanced simulator, a mannequin that can now help the students in the School of Nursing to practice with a virtual patient who may be cured or lose on the table without fear for someone to wear mourning for him.

Director of Nursing, Maria Jesus Nunez, said the dummy-patient is the “cornerstone” of the simulation unit that opened yesterday in that college, and to “provide students the best way to practice to have one of the best art simulators that are in Galicia and in almost all of Spain, as only three other universities have it. ”

The unit was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of the European Higher Education Area, Maximum Plo Casaus, the rector of University Community, José Manuel Mayán, and the manager of the 061, Antonio Iglesias, as well as faculty and students.

Once dubbed the classroom, the students got down to work and began practicing with the simulator, as explained by Maria Jesus Nunez, “through a software can reproduce any possible disease: myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, sprains, appendicitis or fracture.

But students can not only do resuscitation in the event of a heart attack, but can also manage, through the drug of their choice. If you make the right treatment, the patient will be saved, otherwise, will not recover. “All this may prove through a monitoring system,” said the director of the School of Nursing.

Nunez said the simulator will be used in the Master of health care and care management, and also in the degree of Nursing. In the near future also provides for use by residents of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The acquisition of advanced simulator-at a cost of 36,000 euros is the result of an agreement between the University of Santiago and the Xunta de Galicia.

The implementation and operation of the classroom simulation has received the “valuable” partnership of 061, Nunez said.

It was a stressful situation for three nurses who had never participated in childbirth: a woman 32 weeks pregnant with pains and contractions.

The doctor was delayed in traffic. The nurses checked the vital signs calmly told him that will bid and even comforted.

“Everything’s fine, Mom,” the patient told the nurse Jascinth Brown, Plantation General Hospital. Fifteen minutes later, a premature but healthy baby was born with feet first.

Although the situation seemed real, the patient was a life-size mannequin named Noel. Within artificial baby had a cord and all.

Medical simulators have come a long way since the 60s, when first used a dummy named Annie to teach CPR. Using sensors and computer to mimic human reactions bodies, mannequins respond to anesthesia and mimic heart attacks and arrhythmias. They breathe, bleed, cry, speak and even give birth.

And its use has grown rapidly in Florida, where dozens of hospitals, universities, high schools and fire departments use them.

“They seem real,” said Brown, who was attentive to his patient’s vital signs on monitors during a recent training activity organized by the Florida Atlantic University (FAU). “I’ve worked in labs at the School of Nursing, but I’ve never seen a real game. Here we simulate a birth.”

Experts believe that the simulations improved medical services to provide an opportunity for students to learn critical skills and make mistakes in a realistic setting, without compromising the patient’s life. Students are tested and sometimes filmed during the drills.

The trainers then discussed ways in which students can improve their skills.

Plantation nurses said they had blood drawn to the pregnant patient, a mistake that they will never commit.

“They gained experience and confidence they need before getting into a situation where they do can mean life or death of a patient,”said Mark Goldstein, director of FAU simulation center.

After six weeks of classes and simulations, nurses begin to deal with patients.

FAU has two simulation centers, one in his compound in Boca Raton and one in St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where the simulation took place recently. The exercise of labor was part of a new convention to which the university helps train nurses from 12 medical centers in Hospital Corporation of America in South Florida and elsewhere.

The Research Center of Medical Education Michael S. Gordon, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miami (UM) is a simulation centers oldest and best established in the country. Gordon, MD, UM professor, invented in 1968 a cardiac patient simulator called Harvey that is often used.

European scientists are developing a portable device that will allow custom known diabetes, in minutes, the amount of glucose in your blood. The device will improve self-management of the disease and prevent damage by impairment of control. The device consists of sensors that will be attached to the body to detect a number of parameters like blood glucose or blood pressure.

With these data, patients may tune in the administration of doses, avoiding physiological complications arising from an excess of insulin. In four years it is expected that the technology is available on the market. Scientists say it is very necessary because diabetes is increasingly present in our society as a result of lifestyle we lead. For Yaiza Martínez.

Diabetics can reduce the amount of insulin that administrate with the help of a new portable and wireless device designed to predict blood glucose levels.

This device, known as “DIAdvisor ™” will be developed by the company Toumaz Technology, specializes in manufacturing wireless devices and low power consumption to control the body. The project falls under the Seventh Framework Program of the European Community, which has earmarked 7.1 million euros.

The purpose of development of this device is to improve the lives of millions of diabetes patients, with an art tool for personalized prediction of blood glucose levels, reports Toumaz Technology in a statement.

The tool will be created thanks to a partnership of 13 doctors and several industry partners and academics. The work will be coordinated by Novo Nordisk company specializing in the care of this disease.

What is

DIAdvisor technology (Personal Glucose Predictive Diabetes Advisor) will be based on a wireless control technology of the body, existing and belonging to the company Toumaz Technology Sensium call.

Sensors consist of small, wireless and discreet, surrounded by a silicium chip low-power, which will stick to the body of the sick to log certain data, such as body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose levels or oxygen, among other parameters.

According to The Engineer magazine reported online, the system transmits this data to a portable mobile device like a PDA or PDA. By hand, it may also introduce any other information you want, like food that has consumed the patient.

All these data will be analyzed later by an advanced algorithm to determine glucose levels in the patient’s blood at any particular time. In this way, patients will know in a matter of minutes, the amount of insulin will be administered at the next dose.

Breakthrough
According to Keith Errey, co-founder and president of Project Toumaz, current techniques for managing diabetes does not offer the ability to predict blood glucose levels in the short term. This means that patients should almost assume the amount of insulin they need to recover the stable levels of blood glucose.

Scientists hope, moreover, that this technology serves to avoid the risk of blackouts suffered by diabetics when their blood sugar levels drop dramatically. Many of the sick, in fact, prefer to consume higher doses of insulin than necessary to avoid the crisis, but the excess insulin also has its risks, including possible damage to the eyes, heart or liver.

But before he can see the light DIAdvisor are still important steps to take, how to define the combination of vital signs that provide the best information to determine the blood glucose level. For this, scientists will have a team of volunteers with diabetes to help generate the physiological models and prediction algorithms.

Within two years, will begin clinical trials in which they will operate these algorithms in real time and test the prediction models. If everything runs according to plan for the scientists, the technology will be available in the market within four years.

Technology increasingly necessary
According to published Toumaz, the massive increase in the incidence of diabetes is now a major global health challenges. This increase is due to demographic trends clear, as the epidemic of obesity, aging, or the spread of sedentary lifestyles.

All these factors have caused a massive spread of diabetes, especially type 2. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, but in the pancreas of type 2 if that makes it, but the body assimilates as it should.

Consequently, the pancreas produces more insulin to get glucose into cells, and just exhausted due to excessive strain. In addition, blood sugar levels get too high.

In the European Union, the average prevalence of this disease is 7.5% but is expected to increase to 16% in 2025. Scientists hope that, with DIAdvisor, it can provide a sophisticated treatment of the sick, thus enhancing self-management of disease and reduce the risk of serious complications resulting from poor control of glucose levels in the blood.

The staff of the Endoscopy Unit, Hospital Vega Baja has been a total of 4918 diagnostic techniques in 2009, representing an increase of 23% over the previous year, which made 3991 tests.

Endoscopic demand is growing and tending to increase its minimally invasive nature and the great amount of information it provides. It also enables accurate and efficient diagnosis while curative treatments.

Also, the endoscopy unit is equipped to perform a technique called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), which is recommended for diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases of the biliary tract and pancreas. Before his deployment was also carried out a great effort of organization and training section, carrying out some of its practitioners a training process that enabled their entry into the service portfolio.

Before the launch of this new technique for patients who needed it had to be moved to other hospitals. A total of 122 patients have been able to benefit from this new technique.

Increased patient safety
The Endoscopy Unit has significantly increased the safety of the patient undergoing the endoscopic procedure, reducing the inconvenience that may occur in patients undergoing surgery and improved the comfort of them. It also allowed us to increase the activity of the unit, with the consequent reduction of waiting time and the operation of this service which is adjacent to external queries.

The endoscopy area consists of a pre-sedation room, two rooms for gastrointestinal examinations and a room for endoscopic examination of breath. All are equipped with the latest technology, with towers high definition endoscopy. Moreover, integrating a sedation and recovery room consisting of four beds reserved for the recovery of patients treated, with complete equipment for surveillance monitoring of patients after anesthesia.

It also has a cleaning and disinfection module connected to the three endoscopy rooms, where they proceeded to a prompt and proper sterilization of equipment to expedite and other interventions.

Researchers developed a system for performing ultrasound with cell attached to a small tube through a USB device. The system could become “essential computer in the developing world, where medical personnel prepared scarce, but most of the population, up to 90%, have access to mobile phone masts,” said one of its inventors , the American engineer William D. Richard.

70% of world population has no access to this diagnosis, I say Zar, since it is difficult to have an MRI or scanner in a rural community where there is no electricity. Through the cell, the images may be sent to a centralized unit where specialists can analyze and diagnose.

The technology used for Windows-compatible phones, the company that funded the research with a grant of 100 000 dollars. The probes are priced at about $ 2 000 and the goal is worth $ 500, while a typical portable ultrasound machine sells for up to 30 000 dollars.
