Philips today announced the microTEE, the world’s smallest ultrasonic probe for the so-called draft transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), a special procedure for cardiac imaging in neonates.

From now on risky procedures can be performed on the heart of a baby having a better visual inspection, since an intervention can now be monitored throughout the whole course using ultrasound imaging. With their only 7.5 millimeters in diameter is microTEE only about one third as large as previous pediatric TEE probes. Especially the smallest and most vulnerable patients will benefit from this great technological progress.

The thin, flexible tube is inserted into the esophagus and positioned accurately by the examining physician. Its proximity to the heart of the upper digestive tract makes it the ideal starting point for the cardiac ultrasound. From there, the presentation of cardiac structures and the large proximal cardiac vessels is largely trouble free. Thus arise during a surgical high-resolution images of the heart, without affecting the air in the lungs or ribs imaging.

The new multiplane probe possible by the almost three-dimensional perspective, and by the extremely good imaging a more accurate diagnosis. The intervention, such as how to troubleshoot a complex heart defect, can therefore be made secure planning and faster. Another advantage is that the success of individual surgical steps can be carried out during the procedure, so that it can be assumed that will reduce the number of corrective re-operations.

“The microTEE probe represents a major step forward in our capabilities for intra-cardiac imaging in infants and young children,” said Karlheinz Meier, Business Unit Manager, Philips Healthcare ROOF. “The miniature probe has proved to be highly risky for our pediatric surgeons in the already considered invaluable. Finally, our smallest patients can also use this gentle intraoperative imaging will be monitored.”

Previously was a radiation-free ultrasound imaging in young infants during critical cardiac catheterization or surgery is not possible – the draft probes were too large, so they for the cardiac imaging of the child’s esophagus does not have could be used. For this reason, high-risk procedures were routinely performed in these tiny patients of cardiologists and surgeons without the supporting TEE images.

Of course, the miniature wonders can also lead to diagnosis and treatment monitoring are used in adult patients who have probes such as problems swallowing conventional TEE.

Many of us have seen a doctor and seen (or experienced) the ultrasound machines, which among other things are used to see babies in the womb, or scan your brain.

However, these machines are usually quite large, and the most modern “portable” is the size of a printer.

For now the GE (General Electric) has demonstrated a truly portable ultrasound system the size of a cell phone, which he calls the vscan GE Ultrasound System.

In this first generation, the device can operate for up to 1 h duration with a battery (exchangeable) integrated, and microSD cards can store images and videos, which can later be downloaded to PCs and traditional computers can even burn notes voice separately.

The standard equipment is configured for HP, OBGYN, and Abd (terms such equipment operators understand) and color Doppler support across the screen, which step can be manipulated with your fingers to issue commands and make JOINING zoom like an iPhone.

The device will be available next year at U.S. $ 10,000, and it is currently being tested in some health centers.

It is important to note that these teams started costing millions of dollars and being the size of an entire room, after hundreds of thousands of dollars, and now cost $ 10,000 and fit in the palm of the hand. A great testament to the exponential growth of technology, which incidentally causes a reduction in costs exponentially.

In the future I imagine that these devices do not use screens, but images deployed directly onto the retina of the operator with technologies like this.

The Province of Buenos Aires opened the envelopes of the Public Bidding for. Appliances that are expected to arrive in the course of this year for use in the local hospital. Analysis will expand substantially through imaging.

The local hospital Virgen del Carmen, this year will be equipped with a portable ultrasound and mammography, as assured sources of the Health Ministry in Buenos Aires DISCUSSION.

The provision of infrastructure, to conduct timely analysis to patients, is part of the recent opening of the tender envelopes by the Provincial Government with the aim of improving the technological equipment in the hospitals.

A mammography unit is a rectangular box containing the tube that generates X-rays. The unit is used exclusively for X-ray examinations in the breast with special accessories that allow only the ma-ma will be exposed to X-rays Connected to the unit super-carriers of a device he argues and compresses the breast and positions in order to obtain images from different perspectives.

Since the ultrasound carrier arrived tiles ultrasound market, the chances of obtaining medical diagnoses were expanded its horizons in all specialties.
These devices have all the benefits of conventional ultrasound machines have, in some cases, more than 100 pounds.

The latest models feature high resolution screens of images, which makes them a more than attractive tool for work and development of diagnostic imaging.
For its malleability, the portable Delphi ecogra won, in principle, much ground in the area of medical emergencies, since they allow a diagnosis in situ without the removal or excessive patient movement.

Electronic retinal implant or bionic eye that can help disabled people with a certain look better, getting closer to reality thanks to the findings made in the MIT scientists.

This engineering eye is not as perfect as the original eye. But by replacing the function of retinal cells, this bionic robot can help provide the basis for the vision of those who suffer from retinitis pigmentation or age-related muscular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness.

In addition, users will be wearing special glasses equipped with a small camera that can send images to a chip relay wrapped in titanium that is placed on the outer surface of the eyeball. The chip will then send the electrode under the retina to stimulate the optic nerve. Glasses will also wireless send that surrounds the eyeball.

MIT scientists have been working to develop this retinal implants for 20 years as part of the Boston Retinal Implant Project. Around 10 years ago, the researchers tested six electrodes in the blind patients, who reported seeing clouds like images when stimulated.

“We need three years to test this retinal implant, in order to work optimally,” explained chairman of the MIT scientists Jhon Wyatt, told Cnet.

Retinal implant has been successfully tested in pigs for 10 months without damaging the electronics.

Around 20 teams around the world who work to make dreams eye implants, is now developing cochlear implants are intended for hearing-impaired people.

Medical researchers in the United States have an ultrasound probe the size of a grain of rice developed, can provide the panoramic pictures from inside the human body. The eight-probe has sensors on every wall would allow a panoramic view.

Ultra-small sensors already exist for some time. The problem: The probes are either sent through the blood vessels or gastrointestinal investigations through the esophagus into the body and has had only one viewing direction. So there was always a rather large blind spot that could not be illuminated in major investigations.

Conventional ultrasound examinations from the outside, which will penetrate deep into the interior of the body to provide physicians with an overview on the state to procure organs, are virtually impossible because the required higher sound track to the detriment of image resolution. Therefore, ultrasound is now used primarily for pregnancy diagnosis. For deeper investigation, however, people take up much more expensive tomography.

With the new probe was developed by researchers at the University of Albuquerque in the U.S. state of New Mexico, are the “tunnel vision problems” of the past. Within a short time, the probe may, if it is swallowed as a pill, for example, more accurately provide a picture of the stomach or digestive tract. In the future, the researchers will see, however, the probe deep in the brain, to explore where the bloodstream and thereby prevent strokes or aneurysms.
