Philips today announced the microTEE, the world’s smallest ultrasonic probe for the so-called draft transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), a special procedure for cardiac imaging in neonates.

From now on risky procedures can be performed on the heart of a baby having a better visual inspection, since an intervention can now be monitored throughout the whole course using ultrasound imaging. With their only 7.5 millimeters in diameter is microTEE only about one third as large as previous pediatric TEE probes. Especially the smallest and most vulnerable patients will benefit from this great technological progress.

The thin, flexible tube is inserted into the esophagus and positioned accurately by the examining physician. Its proximity to the heart of the upper digestive tract makes it the ideal starting point for the cardiac ultrasound. From there, the presentation of cardiac structures and the large proximal cardiac vessels is largely trouble free. Thus arise during a surgical high-resolution images of the heart, without affecting the air in the lungs or ribs imaging.

The new multiplane probe possible by the almost three-dimensional perspective, and by the extremely good imaging a more accurate diagnosis. The intervention, such as how to troubleshoot a complex heart defect, can therefore be made secure planning and faster. Another advantage is that the success of individual surgical steps can be carried out during the procedure, so that it can be assumed that will reduce the number of corrective re-operations.

“The microTEE probe represents a major step forward in our capabilities for intra-cardiac imaging in infants and young children,” said Karlheinz Meier, Business Unit Manager, Philips Healthcare ROOF. “The miniature probe has proved to be highly risky for our pediatric surgeons in the already considered invaluable. Finally, our smallest patients can also use this gentle intraoperative imaging will be monitored.”

Previously was a radiation-free ultrasound imaging in young infants during critical cardiac catheterization or surgery is not possible – the draft probes were too large, so they for the cardiac imaging of the child’s esophagus does not have could be used. For this reason, high-risk procedures were routinely performed in these tiny patients of cardiologists and surgeons without the supporting TEE images.

Of course, the miniature wonders can also lead to diagnosis and treatment monitoring are used in adult patients who have probes such as problems swallowing conventional TEE.

So far, the patients in whom it came after a severe inflammation of the pancreas to accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity – so-called pseudocysts – had to be frequently operated. However, it is now possible to drain the fluid from the pseudo-cysts in the stomach or small intestine. With the help of a gastroscope (stomach tube) is the puncture. As the Journal of Gastroenterology 2008, 46 reports the success rate is now even with newer devices that are equipped with an ultrasonic probe increased.

Damage to the ducts in the pancreas are the cause of the pseudocyst. Aggressive pancreatic enzymes can thus leak into the surrounding tissue and cause damage like that. This leads to the formation of a pseudocyst, which is filled with secretions, blood and tissue debris. Since they can reach a considerable size, this will often lead to pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Many doctors can give patients a synthetic, a drainage relief.

So far, this was an open abdominal surgery is required. Today, the doctors may be created by the help of an endoscope, a connection between the pseudocyst and the stomach or small intestine and create a drain. Before that must be considered, however, whether this is a true cyst as a result of cancer, as this fact can not be drained, otherwise comes to the spread of tumor cells. Through the normal endoscope, the physician can not see the pseudocyst because it is hidden behind the stomach wall. Here, the ultrasound probe has great advantages. By ultrasound, the doctor the situation and the development of a pseudocyst can assess accurately and to detect cancers typical of a cyst walls. With a fine needle, the physician may be taken in case of doubt, a sample from the cyst and to examine the Flüsigkeit. Endoscopic ultrasound with the distinction between pseudocyst and cancer as possible in up to 95% of cases.

Is the doctor sure that there is no cancer, the pseudocyst is punctured. The liquid is allowed to drain into the stomach or intestine. The doctors can detect finer structures in the vicinity of the stomach and intestines to the high-resolution images of the Endoscopic ultrasound. The duct of the pancreas and bile ducts in the liver, for example, are also included. Here, too, can be punctured by Endoscopic ultrasound. Similar to the treatment of a pseudocyst an “artificial” flow in the stomach or intestine can be created in this way.

Researchers developed a system for performing ultrasound with cell attached to a small tube through a USB device. The system could become “essential computer in the developing world, where medical personnel prepared scarce, but most of the population, up to 90%, have access to mobile phone masts,” said one of its inventors , the American engineer William D. Richard.

70% of world population has no access to this diagnosis, I say Zar, since it is difficult to have an MRI or scanner in a rural community where there is no electricity. Through the cell, the images may be sent to a centralized unit where specialists can analyze and diagnose.

The technology used for Windows-compatible phones, the company that funded the research with a grant of 100 000 dollars. The probes are priced at about $ 2 000 and the goal is worth $ 500, while a typical portable ultrasound machine sells for up to 30 000 dollars.

Health sciences and scientific research to find a new technique that enables them to see clearly genetic AIDS virus.

This technique is like providing a “big picture” to facilitate the genetic study of the AIDS virus. Not only led to the discovery of AIDS therapies in new ways, this technique can also be used to observe and diseases such as influenza virus and others.

“We really hope that this technique can help find the most potent drugs,” said Kevin Weeks of the University of North Carolina, as quoted by Reuters.

“We’ve had a series of major plans we can try through this technique,” he added.

According to Weeks, there are many structures contained in the RNA of HIV genetic role in the expression of the genetic code. Formerly, the role of this structure is not considered to have an important role.

Weeks and his team then developed a new chemical method called SHAPE to create an image of RNA nucleotides and also its shape and fold the edge of the RNA.

Other imaging methods such as X-ray Crystallography can capture the position of each atom exactly, but only in small areas. While SHAPE, showed greater imaging, but not at the atomic level.

“In essence, this technique such a way that enlarge image imaging genetic mapping to get a broader view and more complete details on the genetic virus,” said Weeks.

This technique will help researchers create drugs that is more effective to treat a variety of viruses from the disease.

New drugs will be produced to meet the specific requirements of the virus structure, so it can block them to attack the cells or at least prevent it can replicate itself.

Your dentist can now easily see the mineral content present in tooth enamel with the help of a laser beam generated from the ultrasound.

In the scientific journal Optics Express, Optical Society’s (OSA) Open-Access stated that laser ultrasound is a device that serves to check and analyze tooth decay.

Enamel role in the reduction and replacement cycle of mineral teeth for life. That is, to know that a healthy person’s teeth can be ascertained from the high mineral content in the teeth.

If the balance disturbed the balance of the mineral content, the area will soften tooth enamel and cause tooth decay or porous.

“With a laser ultrasound, dental become faster, cheaper, and effective. This method was safe and not damage the teeth,” said one of the researchers, Hsiao-Chuan Wang from the University of Sydney, was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Tooth enamel is the hardest part and many have the mineral content. Dental health experts say that even stronger tooth enamel compared with the bone.

GE Healthcare announced today the availability of vscan, a new visualization tool pocket developed to provide physicians a means of imaging at the point of care. From the approximate size of a smartphone vscan incorporates a powerful ultrasound technology which uses clever hands of doctors means immediate and non-invasive to obtain visual information about what happens to the inside the body. Vscan is portable and easily transported from room to room to be used in many clinical settings, hospitals or primary care.

The imaging device vscan, which received 510 (k) of the U.S. Agency for Medicines (Food and Drug Administration, FDA), the CE of the European Union and the licensing of medical device Health Canada, is now marketed in the United States, Europe, India and inCanada.

“To have at my disposal the vscan always allowed me to use ultrasound in a variety of settings and with patients in ways I never imagined before? The intensive care unit at the outpatient and ambulatory patients, “said Dr. Anthony N. DeMaria, Professor of Medicine, Chair Judith and Jack White in cardiology and director of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center at the San Diego School of Medicine at the University of California. “Vscan is more than just a diagnostic tool. This portable device would help physicians make quicker treatment decisions. I think technology vscan play an important role in physical examinations. ”

It quickly inside the body using the vscan may allow doctors to detect diseases earlier. What may be most valuable in practice overloaded today, especially for primary care physicians, specialists in cardiology, intensive care and emergency and gynecology, as well as hospital doctors.

“During our initial evaluation of 100 patients about using the vscan, we were impressed by its image quality and ease of use,” said Dr. Jose L. Zamorano, a member of the European Society of Cardiology, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine San Carlos de Madrid (Spain). “But more importantly, we have experienced in our own interest as a tool for our clinical and physical examination, which adds information relevant clinically for approximately one in four patients. ”

Vscan provides image quality that was only recently that the scope of an ultrasound console. Vscan based on graphics technology black and white high quality GE and imaging blood flow in color code embedded into a device that fits into your pocket, weighs less than 500 grams of 76 mm wide and 135 mm in length.

The vscan is an imaging device, measurement and analysis of ultrasound under control, designed for clinical applications of flow and detection of abdominal fluid, cardiology (adult and pediatrics), urology, medicine prenatal / obstetrics, pediatrics and chest / pleura and to examine patient care units front line and care.

Medical researchers in the United States have an ultrasound probe the size of a grain of rice developed, can provide the panoramic pictures from inside the human body. The eight-probe has sensors on every wall would allow a panoramic view.

Ultra-small sensors already exist for some time. The problem: The probes are either sent through the blood vessels or gastrointestinal investigations through the esophagus into the body and has had only one viewing direction. So there was always a rather large blind spot that could not be illuminated in major investigations.

Conventional ultrasound examinations from the outside, which will penetrate deep into the interior of the body to provide physicians with an overview on the state to procure organs, are virtually impossible because the required higher sound track to the detriment of image resolution. Therefore, ultrasound is now used primarily for pregnancy diagnosis. For deeper investigation, however, people take up much more expensive tomography.

With the new probe was developed by researchers at the University of Albuquerque in the U.S. state of New Mexico, are the “tunnel vision problems” of the past. Within a short time, the probe may, if it is swallowed as a pill, for example, more accurately provide a picture of the stomach or digestive tract. In the future, the researchers will see, however, the probe deep in the brain, to explore where the bloodstream and thereby prevent strokes or aneurysms.
